The 73rd Venice International Film Festival is going to start
Within few hours, August 31st, will kick off the Venice Film Festival 2016. The festival sees 20 films in competition this year, out of 19 contests and 19 others in the Horizons section.
Godmother of this edition of the actress Sonia Bergamasco will open the inaugural evening, on the stage of the Great Hall (Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido), and September 10 will conduct the closing ceremony, at which will be announced on the Lions and other premiums officers 73 Show.
During the opening ceremony will be held the screening of the film La La Land by Damien Chazelle, while there will be held the gala dinner and the party on the beach, as a sign of mourning for the recent earthquake that struck our country last August 24.
The exhibition will be dedicated to two great authors, disappeared recently: Abbas Kiarostami, and Michael Cimino, of which will be re-proposed some of most famous works. Will be project one of best films of Michael Cimino, a little underestimated: Year of the Dragon (1985), with Mickey Rourke.
About Abbas Kiarostami, a special program consists of a digital novel of 24 Frames series short film (in which the director was still working), and THIS IS MY MOVIE: 76 Minutes and 15 Seconds with Kiarostami, a mounting film made by Seifollah Samadian, faithful friend and collaborator of Abbas, who for over twenty-five years he had filmed the activity and collected reflections on cinema, photography, art and life.
The jury
Here are the famous names that will compose the Competition Jury of Venezia 73: the director Sam Mendes will serve as president, joined by singer, director and American writer Laurie Anderson, the actress Gemma Arterton, the magistrate, writer, playwright and screenwriter Giancarlo de Cataldo, actress Nina Hoss, actress Chiara Mastroianni, the director Joshua Oppenheimer, the director Lorenzo Vigas, actress, director and singer Zhao Wei
It will be up to the jury awarding the Golden Lion for best film; Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize; Silver Lion – Award for Best Director; Coppa Volpi for Best Actor; Coppa Volpi for Best Actress; Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor or Actress emerging; Award for Best Screenplay; Special Jury Prize.
For the section Orizzonti international jury will be composed by French director Robert Guédiguian as president, the critic and historian of American cinema Jim Hoberman, the Egyptian actress Nelly Karim, the Italian actress Valentina Lodovini, the actress and Korean director Moon so-ri, the critic and film scholar Spaniard Jose Maria (Chema) Prado, the Indian filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane
The Orizzonti Jury award – with no possibility of a tie – the following prizes: Orizzonti Prize for Best Film; Horizons Award for Best Director; the Special Orizzonti Jury Prize; Horizons Award for Best Actor or female; Horizons Award for Best Adapted Screenplay; Horizons Award for Best Short Film; Venice Short Film Nomination for the European Film Awards.
The International Jury of Venezia Opera Prima “Luigi De Laurentiis Award” – Lion of the Future, is composed of: the Italian actor and director Kim Rossi Stuart (President), the Spanish producer Rosa Bosch, the actor and film director Brady Corbet, Spanish actress Pilar López de Ayala, French film critic Serge Toubiana
The Jury of the Venice Award for a Debut award among all the debut the Lion of the Future – Venice Award “Luigi De Laurentiis” and a prize of $ 100,000, provided by Filmauro Aurelio and Luigi De Laurentiis, which will be divided equally between the director and the producer
New in this edition
73. As part of the Film Festival was introduced Venice Production Bridge, a project that aims to give continuity, overcome and specialize the Venice Film Market started in 2012. The Venice Production Bridge will join the Industry Office which instead continue its function throughout the show as in previous years, offering multiple possibilities of assistance to operators. The new VPB will be dedicated to the presentation and exchange of new projects of films and work in progress, to promote their development and their realization.
In the new VPB will be put to good use the experience of the Biennale College – Cinema, innovative workshops for the development and production of low-budget features, which in four years has led to the creation of 13 films that have won prestigious international awards and results .
The Venice-Financing Gap Market will last for two days (2 to 3 September, 2016) and will offer 40 European and international projects selected have the opportunity to define their international financing. In particular, it will present 40 projects in the final stages of development and financing detailed below: 25 feature-length fiction and documentary projects, 15 projects of Virtual Reality & Interactive Web Series and TV series.
The Venice Gap Financing Market aims to organize meeting one-on-one between the individual teams (producer and director) of the 40 projects and key decision-makers of the film industry.
